IS THERE AN ALTERNATIVE TO AMALGAM FILLINGS THEN?

<<<Go Back to Previous Page

I wrote about amalgam fillings, its chemical components and how it is considered in different countries by dentists, last week. What about the options, the alternatives? This is the issue today on this column as some of you might have been thinking.

Are there no alternatives to this filling? It would be right to say this depends on the condition of the teeth. As you probably know there are other options for amalgam, which are, white, gold and plate fillings. But if the damage in the teeth is too deep then amalgam offers the longest lasting option. Because white filling is sensitive to heat which can lead to the filling becoming loose which than could lead to the teeth allowing air to come in which will cause to further damage. When it comes to gold filling patients are not to keen on this treatment because it is costly and the government tends to refuse to offer much support on the use of gold because of high costs. Patients all so feel it falls more into the cosmetic surgery category.

The harm of amalgam filling is being argued but lets not forget the benefits it offers. First of all it is suitably priced. More importantly ,in situations where the damage in the teeth is to deep and to big and want a longer lasting solution there is no other substance, which offers these benefits. Some of  you now are probably thinking to yourselves "oh no I have so many amalgam filling what’s going to happen now!"

There is no need to worry if you are not allergic to any of the materials in the substance, it would be wrong to expect any effects.

Also it would be wrong to expect the known and argued effects of mercury which I mentioned last week, from amalgam filling as amalgam is not just made out of mercury and the amount put in is not much. Returning back to the allergic subject as you can see in the picture an example of what can happen in this situation will be forming our topic for next week.
