Olay News paper Interview with Dr Radmand |
|
You
keep yourself extremely busy with seminars, don't you Mr.Radmand? It seems
as if your intensive studies will continue to keep you busy for longer. Yes indeed. The last seminar I had given was at the end
of year. As you know all the plans and projects are still continuing as
well as the new ones, which have only started. I assume the reason you
said 'your intensive studies will continue to keep you busy' is due to the
projects your newspaper is organizing which I am highly happy about. Let
me explain what these new projects are all about. I can see the interest
increasing towards the campaign called 'Let's Give More Importance to Oral
Health’ after each seminar I hold. It makes me happy to be able to help
my patients and friends in taking care of their oral health with the help
of you friends from media and radio. This not only makes me happy but also
makes me hopeful and helps me to enjoy my job even more. In
this case, at the seminars, which are to be held in the future everyone
who attends, will have a chance to listen various kinds of problems and
the answers in detail, right? Shall we now talk about the seminars that
have been held so far? Of course. There are certain traditional old-fashioned
beliefs in Turkish society which of some are totally wrong or just mislead
information. When I try to go head and search for the reasons of these
beliefs, I come across with striking results. First of all, you can easily notice that Turkey and
other developing countries like Turkey do not provide the same
opportunities like well-developed countries. The important thing to
underline is when you take a look at the income of a citizen of Turkey in
relation with the national income, you can clearly see that people
definitely do not have any luxury to spend much money on dental care.
Moreover, it is even more sad to see that government can not be any help
to this matter...Still the worst thing is to see these old-fashioned
habits passing from one generation to another. What I mean is to have a
regular check-up is a luxury for us in Turkey. How about the Turkish
people who live in Europe? Turkish people who have all the opportunities
in their hands. Is the economical state the real problem? Unfortunately,
we only give importance to our teeth when we are about to lose them so the
answer is definitely NO. For most of us, only time to visit the dentist is
when we have a toothache. We need to deal with and find a solution to the
other reason of this problem, which is lack of information and education
on this field, which gives a way to ignorance. Our main aim is to combat
with this problem with the help of these seminars. The seminars I organize take place in such a nice
atmosphere in which I try not to bore my listeners with long speeches. I
get prepared and get lots of help from videos, photos and visual aids. As
you have mentioned before within the seminars I answer questions and I try
my best to give the detailed information on the needed area. So
what kind of questions do you come across within the seminars? Apart from the 'Teeth Decays', 'Gum Diseases', I focus
on and share some of my knowledge on my other research areas such as
smoking, alcohol and even drugs, which have great effect to oral health.
As for the questions, they vary so much. It is difficult to put them under
one heading but I can say that they are generally about oral health,
dental habits and dentists, which we only visit when we have a toothache.
We go to doctor or a specialist when we have a stomach-ache, heart
problems or go to a optician when we have problems in our eyes but we need
to change this understanding that says 'We go to dentist only when we have
dental problems'. Mouth and teeth need regular check-up no matter what
unlike in other physical issues. As I always say only way for us to get over this
problem is to replace the mislead information passing from one generation
to another by updated, correct and needed knowledge and freshen up the
information in young ones brains. You can only tame one when young,
therefore just like in other cases in order to have a healthy society one
should first take good care of himself/herself and then inform and educate
his/her children at the right time. The reason for this is children do
what we do, not what we tell them to do. Becoming good models for our children should be one of
our first duties. In order to this we need to read, listen and search. That's why I am here, at the radio and at the
seminars... |
